caibu is paul rose’s first album as scb. the album builds on material from the below the line, old media new society, and engineered morality eps which explored a fictional narrative in which a hypothetical timeline is corrupted by a climate-related disaster. the title of the album itself refers to an imagined surgical procedure where cognitive ability is augmented through transplant from one brain to another. as such, caibu invites the listener to forge their own ideas on the development of society in the context of crisis.

124 recordings know how to put together a deep house compilation, and they re sounding fierce on this latest, appropriately titled levels up. the jams come heavy and funky from a range of on-point operators, leading in with tom jay s quintessential new jersey bump n grind on hanging on. david moran is a little more shadowy but no less groovesome, while nicola brusegan takes things on a sweet and smooth tip. across the whole double pack there are classically informed jams to satisfy the most weary deep house heads, but keep an ear out for the old-school flavoured heft of freak ds power of bass, which should get some seriously jacking airtime in the right kind of dance.

following cottams critically acclaimed i cant carry on ep, which marked the inaugural release on fatcat records new electronic sub label fcr, the highly-rated dj/producers new 12inch drops also via fcr. locked in the groove is a groovy, boogie chugger, which powerfully ebbs and flows over nearly 11 captivating minutes, and sample heavy dub is all dark n heady eastern atmospherics, whilst dreaming of another place is a fathoms deep, epic journey into mystical and majestic dub-house. an avid participant in preston s early rave scene, paul cottam inevitably pursued djing, progressing to warm up slots for his techno heroes surgeon and regis. tentative steps into production using ableton were met with such encouragement that cottams debut releases began to appear. a set of four untitled, un-marketed and unpromoted vinyl self-releases created a huge organic stir with record collectors, attentive journalists and djs including moodyman, gerd janson and soul clap. this buzz was helped in part by speculation on his identity, but was primarily due to his simple yet effective, flavour-filled and groovesome tracks that blurred the boundaries between re-edits, reworks and originals, moving between slow-mo chug and more straight-up house, whilst encompassing elements of disco, hip hop, nu soul and afrobeat.

spinning plates is back for another long overdue release, and this time it comes in the form of a split ep featuring returning artist andy rantzen and laccy with two tracks each. the vinyl only release comes with very special screen-printed silkscreen artwork and is pressed on meaty 180g vinyl for an extra warm and deep sound. andy rantzen is a sydney based artist who appeared on this label s superb second release. the 98% track from it was used by sonja moonear in her cocoon mix cd shared with carl craig, and andy is also well-known as part of the duo itch-e and scratch-e along with paul mac. he assumes that alias here for a remix of the dial. laccy aka pascal sturmer is a young but talented artist who regularly finds himself behind the decks at cult clubs like berlin s club de visionaire and the spaced parties in london. a friend of label a&r bruno schmidt, he just released on francesco del garda s label timeless, is a real underground head with a bottomless well of knowledge when it comes to cult sounds and scenes and is signed to the top crisalida agency.

dense + pika remix seminal nervous records house tune rain by kerri chandler dense & pika are a british electronic production/artist/dj duo compromising of producer/djs alex jones (hypercolour label boss) and chris spero better known to many by his glimpse alias. the duo first came into fruition in mid 2011 with a number of white label releases. it wasnt long until they were noticed by scuba and have since had multiple releases under their belt on adam beyers drumcode, scubas acclaimed hotflush imprint and have branched out onto the elusive hypercolour. dense & pika have also been showing off their remixing talents by reworking the likes of adam beyer & ida engberg, digitalism, disclosure, kda, leftfield, maya jane coles, x-press 2 and also paul woolfords erotic discourse, which won the dj mag category for best remix in 2014.

2013 marks marcos valle s 70th birthday and the 50th anniversary of the brazilian native s debut long player. for the past few years, light in the attic s been obsessed with valle s early 70s work, originally recorded for the odeon label. it s where a new modern brazilian pop sound effortlessly mixed bossa nova, baio and samba with foreign influences like jazz, rock, pop, soul and funk, bringing to mind the sounds of jean claude vannier and david axelrod. tip!!

east man is a new project from anthoney hart and its material predates his previous work as basic rhythm. his unique take on grime reduces the sound to its steely fundamentals, bringing in influences from dancehall, drum and bass and techno to gird the voices of the mcs he works with. his own name for this hardcore continuum mongrel is hi tek.
anthoney struck a friendship with the academic and theorist paul gilroy, who wrote the album introduction below, after starting personal research on representations of working class and mixed race families. he asked paul for some help after coming across his work via stuart hall, paul’s mentor. their discussions and friendship developed, and it dawned on anthoney that his research and the east man album had some synergy, so he asked paul to write a piece conveying that.

mit hitsingles wie -get a life-, -back home- und -sky and sand- (mit seinem bruder paul) hat fritz kalkbrenner in den letzten jahren unser modernes verständnis von elektronischer musik mitgeprägt. nach vier erfolgreichen alben, von denen die letzten beiden die top 10 der deutschen albumcharts erreichten, wendet er seinen musikalischen blick in eine andere richtung. es geht hier um elektronische musik, wie sie fritz kalkbrenner in seiner jugendlichen sozialisierung in den bis heute legendären techno- und houseclubs der hauptstadt in den neunziger jahren kennengelernt hat. die zäsur, des weglassens der so vertraut gewordenen bariton stimme öffnet die tür in die weite welt elektronischer musik, die sowohl für das homelistening, als auch für den clubeinsatz taugt. es gibt auf diesen 12 tracks keine konventionen und manchmal auch kein halten mehr, fritz kalkbrenner lässt sich gehen in der faszination für dub techno, für klare dominante housestrukturen oder auch in feinen hymnischen melodien die aus so manchem titel des neuen albums herausscheinen.

to differentiate between his solo dance-oriented work to the darker tones, kaczmarek aka paul ritch launched his new album titled iiiiiiiiiiiiii on october 30th on his fresh imprint kczmrk. kczmrk is definitely a more personal project for paul, helping him define a newly found darker and more genuine taste to produce electronic music, which would even the most demanding audience left surprised. kaczmareks immersive sounds on his debut album were highly supported by respected artists of the underground scene such as sterac, vril, lewis fautzi, vsk and djedjotronic, who will contribute reworks that will come out in a remix ep in february 2018. the 12inch is gently introduced with a sophisticated remix of iiiii by techno pioneer sterac aka steve rachmad, continuing with vril’s remix of iiiiiiiiii who delivers beautiful ambient tones in a euphoric travel of sound. the b side begins with emerging talent lewis fautzi and his iiiis remix in a deep and hypnotic cut, followed by the curtesy of vsk and djedjotronics remixes of iiiiiiiii. vsk sticks to the dark and hard forms of techno with glimmer of deeper and industrial sounds while djedjotronic enrich kaczmareks dark techno tones with some futuristic idm.

the olympos series continues its exploration of godly themes and adventurous techno with a third instalment, this time calling on demetra, the goddess of the harvest and agriculture. there s a consistently deep tone to all four of the tracks on offer here, employing swooping pads and undulating bleep lines to conjure up a warm, early 90s feel that would sound right at home on an early b12 single. -pump it- is especially deep, using the barest of ingredients to take you on a dreamy, machine-powered trip.

punk 103 is a song from the album ring n roll, released in 2011, may the 2nd. this track was written and composed by catherine ringer, set to music by herself, mark kerr, and rza stone meccas musicians. the b-side of this vinyl is an exclusive acoustic live version recorded during a jean-paul gaultiers private show.

the second release on infidel bodies has as its protagonist -le moderniste- for his debut on the italian label, he produced an album industrial / rhythmic noise, a tribute to some legends of noise music such as: marco corbelli (atrax morgue), maurizio bianchi, tairy ceron (today i m dead), rozz williams. this album is an evocation to sacrality and mysterious fascination of death. the artist radicalizes his sound in this release, getting the result: -a strong work, dark, dirty, it smells death and filth- (le moderniste) this special edition provides a particular package composed of two bags stapled with inside: transparent cassette c60 pro-dubbed, artworks (by paul van trigt), hand-sewn insert, black nitrile gloves.

guede remixes is a remix compilation of dj hell taken from his 5th studio album zukunftsmusik. the release features two remixes by joyce muniz and one by paul nazca. guede’s soundscape is acidic yet minimal, with its distorted vocals and raucous instrumentation lending the track an eerie and at times ethereal vibe. each artist brings a uniquely different perspective on the sound of the original cut, whilst never completely abandoning the track’s core identity. paul nazca infuses it with trance, joyce muniz keeps the acid and adds the deep.

for the second in its new special collector series, music for dreams has asked long-time friend of the label moonboots to pick out a selection of songs with the power to encapsulate moods of calm and moments of contemplation. the result is the exquisite “moments in time” moonboots has been a fixture of the manchester scene since the balearic boom in the late 80s. he runs the prolific vinyl label aficionado recordings together with fellow dj jason boardman, a project that started out as a sunday club night. since 2012, they’ve dished out more than a handful of 12” releases with an ever-surprising selection of underground acts at the fringes of what might be called balearic.

uun returns to his imprint ego death with an ep that showcases his progression in both sound design and atmosphere. the a side kicks things off with on the concept of irony, a broken beat assault which serves as a mission statement with its scattered snares and vocal samples. the tangled web continues this mood but with a more intense structure, heavy on hypnotic synths that weave in and out of the tracks percussive framework. where as the a side is the logical extension of the first three ego death releases, the b side serves to showcase a deeper atmosphere while maintaining uuns preference for dense arrangements. the other features a haunting ethereal pad that floats above a broken kick pattern and a bed of clicks, pops, and field recordings. the closing track, absurd existence, forges all the elements of the artist s sound into perhaps his most melodic work to date. it is therefore senseless to think of complaining since nothing foreign has decided what we feel, what we live, or what we are. jean-paul sartre

nicholas returns to church with a six track mini lp. correspondant welcome berlin duo hinode having established themselves with a string of well received cuts on their own science fiction imprint, they were spotted by chance by label boss jennifer cardini on a recent record-shopping jaunt. with a raw, no-rules sense of machine funk running through everything they create, they’re the perfect match for correspondant and make their label debut with four numerical delights. i lights the analog fire with raw sleaze and off-beat mischief. unkempt and wily, it sets the tone for the entire ep: ii writhes snake-like with its slinky kicks and purring textures, iii slurs with bass groans and shakes with paranoid, alien melodies while iv closes with much more of a tunnelling, sense-blurring experience. total machine harmony, unbounded synthetic creativity, made to mix and wholly outer-planetary. hinode and correspondant are a match made in the stars.
